South LA Costco Mixed Use Breaks Ground

Thrive Living

Ground was broken in South Los Angeles on Wednesday for a new Costco that will also include 800 apartment units, marking a first for the warehouse chain. Located in Baldwin Hills, this mixed-use project includes over 180 units designated for low-income households.

The development is the first under California's AB 2011, streamlining approvals for projects with affordable housing. Local residents are excited about the convenience, jobs, and savings the new Costco will bring. Karen Johnson, a local resident, expressed excitement: ""There are a lot of large families living out here that can't afford large housing, so when they go to buy small stuff they have to spend more money, but when they go to Costco they can buy bulk, and they can save some money. Plus, there are jobs for the community."

The project is expected to create around 400 jobs and includes various services such as pharmacy and optical care. "We are breaking with the old ways of doing things and moving Los Angeles forward," Mayor Karen Bass said at Wednesday's event. "Unprecedented action driven by urgent collaboration in both the public and private sector is what is expected and that's what we are delivering today." The Costco will be the first South Los Angeles location for the retail giant.
