Subcontractor Ordinance to Provide More County Oversight in San Diego

The Board of Supervisors are pushing forward with an ordinance that requires subcontractors on permitted projects in San Diego County access an online portal in order to disclose more information about their business dealings. The Subcontractor Transparency Measures for County Permits ordinance will require subcontractors supply contact information, workers' compensation insurance information, and state Contractor License Board license number and category.

Board Chairman, Nathan Fletcher, who proposed the policy said, "It is important for subcontractors to be held accountable for their work, along with their safety and labor practices. Adding simple disclosures to the online portal will help prevent unqualified operators and violators from doing shoddy work in our community."

Doug Hicks, a representative from the Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters, added that the SWRCC appreciated, "the county being a strong voice for workers and contractors." He went on to say, law-abiding contractors are at a disadvantage compared to those who break the law, so the ordinance, "will send a strong message to contractors as well."
