Harbor-UCLA Medical Complex Shows Steel Framing for New Clinic Building

CO Architects

In West Carson, the steel framework at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center is showing progress as part of a $1.7-billion renovation. The centerpiece of this project is a six-story clinic building, which is being constructed adjacent to the main hospital along Vermont Avenue.

This approximately 370,000-square-foot facility will house outpatient clinics and related services on its lower floors, while the fourth floor will feature conference and education spaces. The top two floors will be dedicated to offices for physicians and administrative staff.

The layout of the building was carefully designed with patient care in mind. The ground floor will provide easier access for patients with mobility challenges to an orthopedic clinic and rehabilitation facilities, along with frequently visited spaces like labs. Specialty clinics, which experience less frequent traffic, will be located on the second floor, while the third floor will offer services for patients from prenatal care to adulthood.

Additional components of the hospital's renovation include the construction of a nearly 550,000-square-foot inpatient tower with 346 beds, a helicopter landing pad, a new parking structure, a warehouse, laboratories, and various supporting facilities.

This new construction is in response to SB 1953, state legislation mandating that California hospitals retrofit or rebuild aging facilities to meet earthquake safety standards by 2030. Similar efforts are underway at other medical centers in Los Angeles County, including Cedars-Sinai and Kaiser Permanente.

The design-build team for the clinic building includes Hensel Phelps, HMC Architects, and CO Architects, with completion expected in Fall 2026.
